SHOPIFY ORDER METAFIELD EXPORT GUIDE
How to export Shopify order metafields when the order CSV leaves them out
The Orders page can export a CSV of standard order details, but Shopify's documented order CSV fields do not include order metafields. To retrieve those custom values, confirm they belong to orders, then use an authorized GraphQL Admin API query or a bulk export workflow.
Choose an export workflowQUICK ANSWER
The standard order CSV is the wrong place to look for order metafields.
Confirm the definition is attached to Orders, with a known namespace and key.
Use an app with order access to request the required metafield values.
Convert API data to your own CSV only after checking IDs, types, and privacy needs.
SEVEN EXPORT CHECKS
Where the missing values went—and how to retrieve them
No metafield column in Orders → ExportCompare the file with Shopify's documented order CSV fields
Shopify's Orders page exports standard order information to CSV. Its published order export field table does not list order metafields. Choosing all orders or including transaction history changes the orders or payment data exported; it does not make this a metafield export.
Keep the order CSV if you need its standard columns. Plan a separate retrieval for the custom order fields instead of adding a guessed metafield header to that export.
A custom field is visible in the adminConfirm its resource owner, namespace, and key
Metafields attach to a specific Shopify resource. A product, customer, or order metafield can have a similar visible label, but querying orders will return only fields on those orders. A definition describes the field; individual orders can still have no value.
In the target store's custom data settings, inspect the Orders definition. Record its namespace, key, type, and any validation rules; then check a known order that actually has a value.
The CSV has Notes or Tags insteadDo not treat other order data as a metafield
Notes, tags, line item properties, and custom attributes have their own meanings and export behavior. Seeing one of them in an order record or CSV does not prove an order metafield was included. A third-party export app may add custom columns, but those are defined by that app's configuration.
Identify the exact source field in Shopify or the app that wrote it. Match its namespace and key before comparing values across exports.
Need one known order fieldUse the Order metafield field in the GraphQL Admin API
Shopify's GraphQL Admin API exposes metafield(namespace:, key:) and the paginated metafields connection on Order. Query the order ID, a human-readable order name, and the field's namespace, key, type, and value together so the result remains traceable.
Have an authorized app query a small known sample first. A missing result can mean the order has no value, the identifier is wrong, or the app cannot read that order; check those separately before scaling up.
Need values across many ordersUse a bulk query and expect JSONL output
Shopify recommends GraphQL bulk operations for large datasets. A bulk query runs asynchronously and returns a downloadable JSONL result, not a ready-made order CSV with metafield columns. Nested metafield records need to be associated with their parent order when you process that output.
Test the query on a few orders, then run a bulk operation through your app. Check the operation status and errors, download the completed result, and map each selected field to an explicit output column.
Older orders or fields are absentCheck app permissions and Shopify's order access window
Order API access is permission-sensitive. Shopify says the Order object normally exposes only the most recent 60 days of orders; older orders require additional approved access. An export tool cannot retrieve data that its app is not authorized to read.
Check the app's order permissions, the requested date range, and whether older-order access has been granted. Limit the retrieval to the data needed for the task.
Need a spreadsheet after the API exportBuild a CSV keyed by stable order identity
API and bulk results are structured data. A practical CSV should retain the order ID and name, use separate columns for each chosen namespace and key, and preserve the field value as returned. Types and reference values may need explicit handling before spreadsheet use.
Keep the raw response, test a few rows including empty values, escape commas and quotes with a CSV writer, and verify the row count and order IDs before sharing the file.
KNOW THE BOUNDARY
What Merch Preflight can check
Product CSVs in this browser
- Product CSV structure and known headers
- Product metafield header patterns
- Common product import dependencies
Order data in Shopify or your app
- Order metafield definitions and values
- API access, bulk operations, and JSONL output
- Customer data permissions and final CSV mapping
The Merch Preflight validator is for Shopify product CSV files. It does not connect to a store, fetch orders, or validate an order API export.
BEFORE YOU EXPORT
Five checks for a dependable order metafield extract
- 1Name the exact field
Record the Orders namespace, key, and type.
- 2Verify a known value
Use one order whose metafield is populated.
- 3Check access
Confirm order permissions and the date range.
- 4Pick the scale
Use a small GraphQL query or an asynchronous bulk operation.
- 5Audit the result
Retain order IDs, preserve raw data, and verify empty and reference values.
FAQ
Shopify order metafield export questions
Does Shopify's standard order CSV export order metafields?
Shopify's documented order CSV fields do not include order metafields. The standard export remains useful for normal order details, but it is not a complete custom-data export.
How can I retrieve order metafields?
Use an app with appropriate order access to query the Order's metafield or metafields through the GraphQL Admin API. For many orders, use a bulk query and process its JSONL output.
Are order notes and tags metafields?
No. Notes, tags, and other custom attributes are distinct order data. Confirm the field's resource owner, namespace, and key.
Can Merch Preflight validate the order export?
No. Its browser-based CSV validator is built for Shopify product CSV files. It does not validate order API results or JSONL exports.
